  • Official: Malay (Bahasa Malaysia)
  • Business & Tourism: English widely spoken in Kuching, hotels, and tourism operators. Less common in remote longhouse communities.
  • Indigenous: Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Orang Ulu, Penan, and 30+ other languages spoken.
  • Chinese: Hokkien, Teochew, and Mandarin widely spoken in Kuching’s Chinese community.
  • Signage: Bilingual (Malay/English) in cities; limited in rural areas.

  • MST (Malaysia Standard Time): UTC+8
  • No Daylight Saving Time

Internet & Connectivity

  • Wi-Fi: Available in hotels, cafes, and malls in Kuching, Sibu, and Miri. Slow or nonexistent in remote longhouses and jungle lodges.
  • Mobile: 4G coverage in cities and major towns; patchy or absent in interior and Mulu. Celcom and Maxis have best rural coverage.
  • Prepaid SIM: Available at KCH airport from 25 MYR.
  • Digital Detox: Many jungle lodges intentionally have no connectivity — plan accordingly.
